I always loved Silver Surfer, even as a kid, but for some reason I've never bought a single SS comic! The most books I've ever purchased with Galactus's herald in it was during the Infinity Gauntlet series (which is still one of my all time favourite comic stories). I also thought that the second Fantastic Four movie would have been 110% less lame if it had just been about SS, but there you go.

Contest FAIL

In case some of you weren't aware of a certain thing known as "crowd sourcing", allow me to briefly explain. Basically, it's when a client or company or individual doesn't want the hassle of choosing just one artist to do a project, or to even pay said artist for the work, they do something strange... they hold a "contest". A "competition" open to the public, to gather as much free work as possible and hopefully get the desired creative result. This sort of thing has sadly become more popular over the last while, and many a naive young artists fall victim to it.
Remember the good old days when companies used to "outsource" (send work to India or China for cheap labour) Now they just package it up in the form of a "contest" and get you to do it for free!! ...oh, but in this case, "if you win", you get a copy of your work signed by the President.
...Lame.

I was never a big Punisher fan, as he isn't really a "super" hero, but basically a dude with lots of guns. I just wanted to let you all know that I just recently ordered this beauty of a toy - Blazing Sword Voltron!! I was a bit hesitant at first, seeing as it was a whole figure and the lions didn't transform, but I just went for it and I'm glad I did. Fantastic action figure!! Go Google some reviews for it. Everyone is lovin it, and rightfully so. I was lucky that I bought it as soon as it was released, so the price was super good. I see it going up fast though.
...Oh, and in case you were wondering about that button on the box - YES, it plays the song from the opening of the original animated show! How cool is that? The UPS guy that delivered it to me, heard it going off in his truck and was so excited when he brought it to the door! Needless to say, I had a brief male bonding moment with the UPS guy.

Here are some "little" sketches that I did from Toronto Fan Expo last weekend. I think I'll do more of these! What d'ya think?!?
The Con was a blast as usual. Saw some great old friends, made some new ones, and met some digital friends in the flesh!

The Little NINJA Fact Book did great! People really seemed to love it! Thanks to everyone who stopped by the table and bought books and prints!! You guys rock!

Here's another little teaser page from my "Little Ninja Fact Book".
The idea for this specific page (and ultimately the entire book) was actually the result of my 3 year old daughter. I was telling my wife and her brother some ninja jokes and my genius daughter picked up on it. She had been learning the importance of looking both ways before crossing the street and amazingly she put the two together and said "Ninjas don't look both ways"! That was it. I had the motivation I needed to actually do a book. Children are definitely a fantastic source of inspiration. I highly recommend having some!!!

I'm pleased to be able to finally announce a fantastic little side project that I've been working on! It's a tiny little illustrated book called, "The Little NINJA Fact Book".
I'll be posting some more images from it in the coming days, as well as some sketches and designs.
The book is at the printers now and will be ready for all of you who want one by August! Just in time for Toronto Fan Expo!! I'll be selling them, along with an armful of other prints, postcards and other special give away goodies at the Con.
After that (depending on how well it's received by all of you art lovers out there), I might make it available for online purchase as well!

I don't know if any of you remember this... it was a long time ago... but it was once suggested that these 4 outcasts could take over as the F4. Anyone remember that?!
Ever since I was a kid I thought the Fantastic four were lame, but when these 4 became a potential, even if it was only a "what if?" scenario, it stayed with me as a very cool memory.
I thought I'd do up a simple little costume design for them. I tried to stay true to their original costumes but adding a unifying style to them. Except for Hulk of course, who's costume usually consists of just some ripped pants. I kept it really simple, but there you go. Hope you like!

Blue Spirit Mask

So, this has turned out to be one of the best/coolest gifts that I've ever bought for myself! :)
If any of you are familiar with Avatar the Last Airbender (and I should hope that you are) you'll know very well what this wonderful thing is that I have here. Not only is this a beautiful piece of art for my wall, but it is actually a functional mask. The mouth and eyes are covered inside with a see through material and it has 3 gray soft fabric straps to tie it on your head(not shown). It is fantastically spot on with the design in the show. ...and the price was super reasonable, especially for the amount of work that went into it.

The creative brains behind this all is a super talented fellow by the name of Robert Rodgers. You can see from the great work he did on my Blue Spirit mask as well the other amazing stuff on his site, that he is great at what he does. Exceptionally skillful to say the least. (Robert even put a video of the mask on his site if you'd like to see that.)

Make sure you drop by his website and check out his work, and if you like it, send him an email and get a quote on something you want! You won't regret it!

So, I was asked by the kind folks over at Planet Pulp to contribute to their monthly pop culture drawings. It's not a new idea, but I felt it was a nice little opportunity to partake in to at least keep me drawing. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up with the monthly topics, but with the workload that Thinkmore studios is bringing me lately, it'll be tough.
Each month they have a different topic. This month it was 'Rescuing a Princess'. I decided to go the opposite direction and chose a princess that doesn't 'really' need rescuing. ...even though, I guess she was rescued... more than once... okay, that's besides the point... she's just an awesome character and I'd never drawn her. Hope you like it.

So, I was recently invited by the talented Mr. Mike Boldt, to be a part of an amazing project called Tools for Schools Africa. The project is a children's book titled - The ABC's of Northern Ghana, and there is a great group of talented individuals who are all contributing to this wonderful opportunity. My letter was V - for Volta River.

I wanted to push this project for my good friends, Nick Thornborrow (from the Anthology Project) and AJ Lieberman (of Cowboy Ninja Viking fame)

TERM LIFE is a 144-page full colour graphic novel written by AJ and drawn by Nick.
Synopsis: Everyone Nick Barrow knows wants him dead. So he takes out a one million dollar life insurance policy payable to his estranged daughter. The problem is the policy doesn't take effect for 21 days. So all he has to do, is survive.
This one hits shelves on January 12.

In other news, AJ Lieberman's Cowboy Ninja Viking has just been picked up by Disney to create the feature film. Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will adapt the Image Comics book.

In other, other news... AJ and I are going to be working a lot together as well. We're currently working on a graphic novel for a well known publishing company. ...don't worry, I won't keep you hanging on for long, I'll fill in details soon!!! Exciting stuff!

Wow... I have to appologize to all of you out there for my lack of postings over the last month or so. I've been mega busy with so many great things!
Most of which consist of now running my own business, Thinkmore Studios, finishing up my comic for The Anthology Project volume 2, finishing up Agent Orange Book one, and a couple of other super important things which I'll let you all know about in another posting this week... all VERY exciting stuff.
So all you fantastic friends out there who have stayed true to this humble little blog, I salute you and promise that there is some amazing things to satisfy your visual senses on the horizon!

Hey everyone!
Just thought I'd give you all the heads up about what's been going on in the life of Rawls.
Not too long ago I got laid off from my full time job, so instead of jumping back into another full time job I've decided to dive head first into the freelance world!! So far it's been exciting/stressful/adventurous/busy/nail biting. Mostly because I have a wife and daughter to take care of!!So without further ado, allow me to introduce - THINKMORE STUDIOS.
I've decided to start my own business and plan on sticking with it. So if any of you out there have concept/design/storyboard/animation/motion graphics/illustration work, feel free to drop me a line!!

I'll be officially launching the website/demo reel on Tuesday.

$900 (USD) , The dimensions of the booth are 6'X8' and it's in the Small Press section. At this point NY Comic Con has not determined a layout.
ALSO, we are ok with the idea of splitting the cost between multiple people, that way it's cheaper for more than one individual to purchase a table. You would just have to split up table time!

It's not often that I do fan art, but I decided to let loose on one of my favourite characters from the Avatar animated series... Sparky Sparky Boom Man!!!
Combustion man was by far one of the most amazing, under used characters. I could watch a whole series about this guy, who he is, what he went through to hone the skills that he now has. That would make a great series I think. Hmmm... idea?! I think so.

And this fella will be the last GL that I do. I was watching Jurassic Park and thought it would be funny to have a dumb ol' dino as a GL. I had the thought after however that the ring would probably have chosen a smarter dinosaur, like a raptor or something. But perhaps this T-Rex is a female. We all know women are smrter than us men anyway. :)

I think this is like my third or so GL creature that is from the sea. I blame the fact that I've been watching BBC's Blue Planet lately... so I think I have sea creatures on the brain!! I'm watching Planet Earth next, so I'm sure that'll change! :)

I figured that if I had a ninja GL, it would only make sense to do a samurai one too! I also picked up on the missed opportunity that someone kindly pointed out, about them using the ring to create a sword instead of using a real one. They'd probably still use their real ones though, simply because they love them and couldn't bear to get rid of them.

I was trying to think of green things that would make good Green Lanterns. I thought of leaves, but that's lame. But that lead me to think of bugs, like a good ol' praying mantis. Everyone loves a wise old mantis. And usually they're great at kung fu as well!

I don't really have much to say about this guy. We'll just say that he can be one of those non-important secondary characters that you come to love but then they kill him off to try and evoke some sort of emotional response out of you, but then you realize that you don't care about him really... heck, you don't even know his name. Poor fellow.

Kind of sticking with the sea creature-ish kinda feel for this guy. He has a little more meat on his bones than the last guy though. He's also amphibious, so no worries about the whole air/water breathing issue! :)

You don't often see a GL who can't go just anywhere he likes. Usually they're air breathing humanoids, but what if one of them was a sea creature who always had to be underwater? He could go anywhere of course, because of his ring. He could create a fine field around himself filled with water. But should he got knocked out in battle, there goes his protective ring of water... and source of air/life. I think it would take a lot to get these GL's out of their natural habitat.

Howdy folks! Hope everyone is having a fantastic spring time so far.
So, after the amazing love I received from you all towards the Hulk March madness postings that I did, I've decided to make the month of June, GREEN LANTERN month. Nothing huge, just an interesting Green Lantern character each day. I'm "really" going to try and post one every day this time round. That's right... every day. ...well, maybe 6 days a week.
I've officially gone mad now.

First of all, this here is just a little sneak peek of some little Orange treats that I'll have at Toronto Fan Expo in a couple of months! I got these beauties done at a fantastic place called MOO. Yes that's right, Moo. This amazing little company impressed me VERY much. Great prices, great quality prints, easy to use site when uploading files, and fast delivery!...just to name a few. I HIGHLY recommend them! One of the coolest features - if you ordered say, 100 cards, you can have a different image on EVERY card!
Secondly, a big shout out to all of you who came out to TCAF last weekend and showed The Anthology Project some love! Thanks!

I thought I'd end off March (April) Madness with a bang. I did this one pretty quickly, but I like how it turned out none the less. This will be the last of my Hulk series... at least for a while. I think I got out enough rage for the next year or so. I'll have to choose a new character to do a series of. Thanks to all you awesome folks in blogger world for your great comments and adoration of my long drawn out March Madness series! Much love to you!

The ANTHOLOGY PROJECT just recently had an itsy bitsy teeny tiny little write up on Drawn.ca.
It seemed to me more like a Joy Ang fan boy expressing his undying love for her and her art, (which I can't really blame him for because Joy is pretty darn awesome)... but it does kind of glaze over the rest of the amazing work that went into this fantastic book. Either way, it's a nice little bit of extra exposure.

Besides Dr. Doom, my personal favourite villains are Apocalypse & Thanos. A fight between our big green friend here and either of those two would be pretty epic I think. I have the feeling that Apocalypse or Thanos would probably beat the Hulk, but he'd sure give them one heck of a fight.

As cool as robotic octopus-like arms would be, they just wouldn't stand up to this unstoppable monster that is the Hulk for very long. Thems the breaks Doc!

April Madness continues!! ...sorry for the lack of postings lately though, life has changed a little for me and I work from home now! Which is fantastic, but I'm still getting used to the whole routine.
I did Hulk smashing Thing because when I was a kid I never thought this was an equal match up. I always remember seeing in comics and hearing people talk about this fight as an epic one, but it just never seemed right to me. -Ultimately strong Hulk vs rock man... no contest.

Feelin' the pressure of a busy life as of late, so the sketchy rushed feeling of this one emulates that. I actually drew this one on the train, so I can use that as an excuse as well for the roughness of it. I don't really like how this one turned out, but there you go.

There are certain sound FX that have stuck with me since my childhood. 'Snikt', 'Bamf', and of course, 'Thwip'. I also believe that all of those are Marvel sounds are they not? Wonder if they have trade marked those?! Can you think of any other classic character sound fx?
Oh... and I know Hulk isn't exactly owning anyone in this image, but I just wanted to have fun with the size relation and Spidey's wispy yet powerful webbing. And in my defense, Hulk is still exerting some madness.
